John Nicholas Cassavetes (December 9, 1929 – February 3, 1989) was a Greek-American actor, film director, and screenwriter. Cassavetes was a pioneer of American independent film, writing and directing over a dozen movies, which he partially self-financed, and pioneered the use of improvisation and a realistic cinéma vérité style. He also acted in many Hollywood films, notably Rosemary’s Baby (1968) and The Dirty Dozen (1967).

Although Hoult initially wanted to study English, he pursued a career in acting and attended Sylvia Young Theatre School. Having made his screen debut at the age of seven in the 1996 film Intimate Relations, he appeared in such television shows as Magic Grandad and Waking the Dead. Hoult had his breakthrough playing Marcus Brewer in the 2002 comedy drama About a Boy, for which he was nominated for the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Young Performer.
